Nestle opens medical nutrition facility in regional Australia

1 November 2012

Nestle Australia has opened a $17 million expansion of its factory in the town of Tongala, in regional Victoria.

Transformed into a state-of-the-art medical nutrition facility for the company’s health sciences business, the Tongala factory will become a manufacturing hub for the region and is expected to produce 7,000 tonnes of product annually by the end of 2013.

“This significant investment by Nestle Australia to extend its Tongala factory into a bigger production hub is a huge vote of confidence by the company in this region,” said Paul Bruhn, Regional Business Head for Nestle Health Science in Asia, Oceania and Africa.

Construction work at the factory took place over eighteen months and included rebuilding and refurbishing part of the existing site and installing new technology and equipment.

The factory will now manufacture Nestle’s hospital-grade ready-to-drink liquid supplements such as Resource, Isosource, and tube feeding solutions for the sick who are unable to consume normal foods. Medical nutrition formulations are designed to help manage health conditions such as diabetes, renal disorders and malnutrition.

Nestle’s investment in the Tongala facility follows a $31 investment in the company’s Purina pet food factory in New South Wales earlier this year.

Nestle Australia’s parent company – Nestle S.A. – is one of the largest food companies in the world. Established 140 years ago, the Swiss multinational now has 461 operations in 83 countries around the world.
