German logistics company expands in Australia

5 December 2012

The huge German logistics company, DB Schenker, has established a new logistics warehouse and operations centre in Erskine Park, Sydney. The site will employ 80 people and cater for the logistical needs of some of Australia's largest electronics, consumer, as well as healthcare and office supplies companies.

This is the fifth distribution site for DB Schenker in New South Wales and the 16th in Australia.

“In Australia, we deliver almost half a million items each year,” said Dr Thomas Lieb, CEO of Schenker AG.

Dr Lieb said that the new warehouse is a vital link in the company’s global chain and its opening marks an important step in the company’s strategy of expansion in this part of the world. “In Australia, we are at the edge of a local boom in resources that has driven exponential growth in our Perth business. We are also playing a significant role in bringing Australian businesses closer to their customers and suppliers in Asia.”

Part of the Transport and Logistics division of Deutsche Bahn AG, DB Schenker is one of the world’s leading providers of international land, air and sea freight forwarding and logistics services. Founded in Vienna over 130 years ago, the company now has 94,000 employees and some 2,000 offices around the world.

Schenker Australia recently marked fifty years in Australia. The company set up operations in Sydney in 1962 with just one employee.
