Australia’s infrastructure schedule swells to $60bn
2 April 2013
Infrastructure projects listed on the National Infrastructure Construction Schedule (NICS) website have nearly doubled in less than a year, according to a statement from Infrastructure and Transport Minister Anthony Albanese.
The 103 projects on the NICS bring the total value of hospitals, roads and other work listed on the site to more than $60 billion.
The NICS is a database of all known and forecast infrastructure investment projects by Australia’s federal, state and local governments. The site, which has had nearly 2 million hits so far, helps infrastructure companies in Australia and potential overseas investors stay abreast of existing and upcoming projects.
“Over time, the NICS will open up and attract more participants into the sector, which, in turn, will be good for competition and the price taxpayers ultimately pay to build the modern, well-planned infrastructure Australia needs for the future,” the Minister’s Office said in the statement.
New projects include the $1.6 billion Port of Melbourne Port Capacity Project and the $300 million Blacktown Mt Druitt Hospital Stage 1 Expansion, which are both at the tender stage. The Mental Health Program Phase 2 and the Critical Infrastructure Projects in Queensland, both in the planning stage, have also been added to the NICS site.
The Australian Government has upgraded the NICS website, providing instant updates on individual projects, an improved search function and information on upcoming projects.
