German and Australian companies cooperate on advanced carbon fibre research
9 July 2013
A memorandum of understanding (MoU) has been signed between leading business and research organisations in Germany and Australia aimed at developing the global market for carbon fibre composites.
The German industry cluster MAI Carbon and Victorian Centre of Advanced Materials Manufacturing (VCAMM) signed the MoU at the JEC Composites Show 2013 in Singapore.
The agreement will facilitate greater access to research and information about potential opportunities for companies from both countries, including how best to mass produce carbon fibre composites.
MAI Carbon comprises business, research and educational institutions active in developing technologies for fibre-reinforced composite materials. Based in the Munich-Augsburg-Ingolstadt region, its focus is the automobile and aerospace industries as well as mechanical and plant engineering.
Melbourne-based VCAMM helps Australian manufacturing businesses develop new ideas, solve problems, find new markets and partners, and attract investment.
VCAMM and Deakin University, with the support of the Victorian Government, showcased Australian expertise in carbon fibre science, materials and manufacturing research on the 'Carbon Nexus' stand at last month’s JEC Composites Show.
‘Carbon Nexus’ is a A$34 million international centre of excellence being set up in conjunction with VCAMM and the Australian and Victorian governments. It aims to enhance Australia’s capacity in the carbon fibre industry.
MAI Carbon is an industry cluster made up of 72 businesses, educational and research institutions as well as organisations from Germany’s Munich-Augsburg-Ingolstadt region. Founding partners include Audi, BMW, Premium AEROTEC, Eurocopter, Voith and SGL Group.
VCAMM is a not-for-profit company established to improve the competitiveness and sustainability of Victoria’s and Australia’s advanced manufacturing industries, through innovation and development of leading businesses and technologies.
