Australian environmental solution to save Italian lake5 March 2009Australian environmental expertise is being used to save the ailing ecosystem of Lake Varese, which is situated near heavily populated areas in the north of Italy. The Australian Trade Commissioner for Italy, Tim Gauci, announced the start of a year long trial of Phoslock at Lake Varese. A natural product produced from bentonite clay specifically designed to reduce harmful algae in water sources, Phoslock was developed by the Australian Government’s research arm, the CSIRO (Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial research Organisation). Phoslock Water Solutions Ltd’s Regional Manager, Nigel Traill, said that Phoslock has been successfully used on many lakes in other parts of the world. “We expect the trials to show a significant reduction in the bio-available phosphorus levels within the water columns and sediments within one to two weeks of the application,” Mr Traill said.
