Australia at a Glance: Using the Map
Map Navigation
The interactive map is designed to provide a snap-shot view of Australia with key information of interest to potential foreign investors.
There are three views available on the map:
Socio-economic: provides basic data on demographics, labour market, education and languages, economic activity and R&D expenditure.
Industry: provides information on employment, GDP, number of companies, R&D expenditure by industry sector. Also select the CRC point data and you can also get an overview of key research centres for that industry sector.
Innovation: provides a snapshot of key Australian innovation resources including R&D expenditure and Cooperative Research Centres (CRCs) and universities.
Usage scenario for the Socio-economic tab
- Select a category (for example Demography)
- Select a subcategory (for example Population)
- Allow time for the map shading to complete (the Map key provides context to map shading)
- Select a state, the statistics panel will open, and the relevant data will be highlighted
- Click ‘hide stats’ to return to the map view
Usage scenario for the Industry tab
- Select an industry (for example Mining)
- Select a sub-category (for example Employed persons by sector)
- Allow time for the map shading to complete (the Map key provides context to map shading)
- Select a state, the statistics panel will open, and the relevant data will be highlighted
- Click ‘hide stats’ to return to the map view
Usage scenario for the Innovation tab
- Select the Innovation tab
- The default view shows total expenditure on R&D in Australia for 2008-2009 and point data for CRCs (Cooperative Research Centres) and Universities
- Select a point data pin to see address and contact details
Point Data and Industry type
At any time a user can select point data for CRCs (Cooperative Research Centres) and Universities to view address and contact details.
Please note if you are working in the Industry tab and you select for example ‘Mining’ as the Industry category and then click CRC point data category then only those CRCs relating to the Mining industry will appear. However, for those Industry categories that do not have a matching CRC all CRCs will be shown on the map.
