Mission finds opportunities abound in Asia for Australian ICT companies
18 Jan 2011
A summary report on the Digital Economy and Broadband Application mission organised by the Australian Trade Commission - Austrade - to Japan, South Korea and Singapore in late 2010 (October 18-26) is now available online.
Supported by the Department of Innovation, Industry, Science and Industry (DIISR), the mission examined the benefits of high speed broadband and opportunities created by the National Broadband Network (NBN) rollout.
The mission found markets and governments in Asia are committed to fast broadband and have developed policies and programs to encourage major investments and prioritise connectivity, usage, speed, ubiquity and innovation.
The mission validated the potential for inward investment and R&D partnerships to develop Australian industry capability and establish Australian leadership in the development of high-speed broadband applications.
In 2010, it was estimated that Japan spent US$348 billion on ICT, South Korea spent US$76 billion and Singapore spent US$20 billion.
The comprehensive summary of the Digital Economy and Broadband Application mission report is available here (PDF).
Mission delegates have agreed to establish a broadband technologies advisory group to share industry information and provide thought leadership to the broader ICT industry and Austrade. Issues will range from technology comment and evaluation to trade, investment and R&D opportunities.
Australian organisations which participated in the mission were:
- Australian Information Industries Association
- Communications Alliance

- Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO)
