Trends and opportunities

The market

Local consultants experience difficulties competing at higher skill levels with foreign consultants and in commanding the rates of their expatriate counterparts. In addition, most companies, especially the multinational companies, also see the local consultants as less experienced than its foreign counterparts.

The legal system in Indonesia is based on a civil law system, which relies solely on legislation. Based on this system, each case is decided in isolation, and thus more informal trust-based relationships are needed to do business in Indonesia.

Opportunities

The opportunities for Australian companies exist mainly in providing consulting services in the areas of:

  • Finance (eg. restructuring, debt brokerage, due diligence, forensic accounting and privatisation and outsourcing)
  • Task definition (eg. planning, contract negotiation and other legal advice, systems application and systems integration, management systems and training and marketing)
  • Industry portfolio (eg. telecommunications, banking and finance, mining and natural resources, and health and government services)

Tariffs, regulations and customs

Non-tariff barriers include the limitation placed on the number of expatriate personnel allowed to work and the constraints in issuing visas.

Marketing your products and services

Market entry

To promote your services in Indonesia’s professional services sector, Australian suppliers should consider:

  • Finding a local partner
  • Approaching government offices and multilateral funding organisations for projects
  • Visiting Indonesia and following up regularly to establish personal relationships

Foreign consultants with Indonesian language skills, a support network or a local partner will have a greater chance in succeeding, as Bahasa Indonesia is still the main language for conducting business within the local firms, especially in the public sector organisations.
