Overview

Australia’s renewable energy industry is diverse and includes bulk electricity generation from wind, biomass and hydro power, as well as technologies and expertise in photovoltaics, geothermal, solar hot water, remote area power systems and energy storage.

World focus on the risk of climate change is driving rapid growth in the international market for renewable energy technology. Global renewable energy grew at rates of 15-30 per cent annually for many technologies during the period 2002-2006. In 2007, $US100 billion was invested in new renewable energy capacity, manufacturing plans and research and development. (REN21).

Government policies encouraging renewables are in place in at least 60 countries and include mechanisms such as feed-in tariffs, renewable quotas, tax incentives, capital investment subsidies and public investment or financing for renewable installations or research and development.
