Australian export case study

OzmotechA $190 million deal signed in The Netherlands by Melbourne-based Ozmotech will generate export income for Australia and help promote environmentally friendly energy overseas.

The environmental technology developer will supply 31 ThermoFuel systems that turn waste plastic into diesel fuel.

When in full production the systems will produce more than 350 million litres of diesel fuel per annum from more than 400,000 tonnes of waste plastics, most of which would otherwise be destined for landfill.

The systems were bought by Dutch waste management business EnvoSmart Technologies for deployment in Germany, The Netherlands, Poland, Sweden, The Czech Republic and other European countries.

The signing ceremony was hosted by Australian Ambassador to The Netherlands, Stephen Brady, who said the contract was the largest-ever signed at the embassy residence.

Ozmotech CEO, Garry Barker said the European sale is a significant boost to Victorian manufacturing industry because all the systems will be manufactured in Melbourne.

"And it's of great benefit to the Australian national interest, earning around $50 million in export income a year," Mr Barker said.

"Our overseas sales efforts received great support from the Austrade administered Export Market Development Grants (EMDG) Scheme."

The EMDG scheme is the Australian Government's principal financial assistance program for aspiring and current exporters.

Ozmotech Marketing Manager Marc Middleton said the business recently received its fourth EMDG grant to help their marketing efforts overseas.

"The EMDG has been a wonderful aid to our international marketing," Mr Middleton said.

"It’s meant we could set a larger budget for overseas promotional activities, do more trade shows, have more meetings, make more contacts and see more clients, all of which has led to our excellent brand and product awareness in Europe and the US.

"Ozmotech would not be where we are today, going from zero to over $250 million in export orders in just three years without the EMDG scheme. And there's a lot more sales to come," Mr Middleton said.

The European deal means that 46 out of more than 60 Thermo Fuel systems sold to date will be exported.
