Australian export case study

Innovative Australian-designed technology, which revolutionizes teaching by video analysis, is now being used by the Singapore Government for educational research and in the training of nurses.

sportec_large.JPGNew South Wales-based Sportstec Ltd, through their Studiocode Business Group division, has designed and developed this teaching tool.

“Our video analysis system gives immediate results during teaching sessions,” said Sportstec’s CEO Philip Jackson.

“For example, with Studiocode there is no longer any need to spend countless hours fast-forwarding and rewinding videotapes in order to pull out important bits of information.”

Mr Jackson said that this video analysis system came out of a project run by the University of Melbourne.

“This is a continuing study about best practice in the class room which has been going for about five years now,” he said.

“Representatives from Singapore were some of the early participants in this study.  They saw the value of the system and it is now being used by the Singapore National Institute of Education for educational research and pedagogy – the teaching teachers how to teach.

“And the Institute of Education (ITE) East is now using Studiocode to review the teaching of nurses,” he said.

“More than 13,000 nurses are trained at this Institute in Singapore each year and part of their training includes having their daily procedures videotaped for feedback and analysis.

“This can be something as simple as giving an injection, to more subtle interactions such as verbal and non-verbal contacts with patients.”

Mr Jackson said that the Singapore-Australia Free Trade Agreement (SAFTA), which came into effect in July 2003, had opened up the Singapore Government Procurement market for Australian companies.

He added that Austrade Singapore had assisted Sportstec in getting Singapore government contracts.

“Sherleen Seah, our Business Development Manager at Austrade Singapore, was extremely helpful with introductions and in opening doors that would not have been opened previously.”

Sportstec’s Studiocode system is also used by many universities and learning institutions around the world, including to Berkeley, Duke, Hawaii and Stanford Universities in the United States; Bath, Birmingham and Glamorgan Universities in the United Kingdom; Saint-Luc Clinique University in Sweden; University of Southern Denmark in Denmark; and Simulearn in Italy.

Studiocode is used in many other countries including Argentina, Canada, Chile, China, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, South Africa, and Thailand.
