Water overview

(Last updated: 7 Feb 2012)

Australia’s vast experience of drought and flood conditions has placed the Australian water industry in a unique position to capitalise on its significant capabilities and strengths in the management of water resources. Backed by a strong governance framework, Australian water businesses have produced innovative world class products, services and solutions to address the challenges of water management.

As other nations begin to address the effects of climate change, they can learn from Australia’s experience in building resilience into our water system to successfully secure their own water futures:

  • integrated water management expertise for both agricultural and urban economies
  • sophisticated technologies for maximising irrigation efficiency in agriculture production systems and urban parklands
  • proven advanced water infrastructure planning, implementation and management capabilities
  • leading technologies for environmental monitoring and remediation
  • long experience in highly variable and dry conditions and dealing with sudden climate change
  • proven success in reducing household water usage
  • extensive water recycling systems for industrial, resources and energy industries
  • world-leading research and development working with government and non-government organisations and industry groups to deliver solutions
  • scientifically based water sharing arrangements and policy development
