Government support
A$12.9 billion national plan ‘Water for the Future’ provides secure long term water supply for all Australians. This single national framework integrates rural and urban water issues and focuses on:
- taking action on climate change
- securing water supplies
- using water wisely
Some programs included under ‘Water for the Future’ are:
- A$1.6 billion Water Smart Australia for large-scale development and employment of new technology and infrastructure
- A$101.2 million for 19 water security projects for cities and towns
- A$5.8 billion for Sustainable Rural Water Use and Infrastructure program
- A$3.1 billion for Restoring the Balance in the Murray-Darling Basin river system
- A$500 million to recover 500 giga litres of water for the environment in the Murray River.
