Business Club Australia Success Story | PTW Architects Managing Director, John Bilmon speaking at one of BCA's events in Beijing | | The 'Watercube' on a busy night during the Olympics in August 2008 | The Australian-designed Watercube received another accolade last week, winning two categories in the 2008 International Design Awards competition. PTW Architects with ARUP and CCDI, won the prestigious "Architect of the Year" Award, as well as the "Conceptual" Award. The team is delighted to receive this recognition, competing against the world’s most visionary designers and new and emerging talent. PTW Architects is one of several Australian businesses to leverage their success and expertise from the 2000 Sydney Olympics by winning further contracts at the 2008 Olympics Games in Beijing. PTW designed the main Olympic Village in a project worth around $400 million and the award-winning “Watercube” National Swimming Centre in association with CCDI and ARUP, which “combines the symbolism of the square in Chinese culture and the natural structure of soap bubbles, translated into architectural form.” Managing Director John Bilmon has played a pivotal role in PTW’s expansion into Asia. “It is enheartening to know that the idea has been realised: the building we showed on the design drawings has in fact been built more or less as the design drawing indicated,” Mr Bilmon said. “The design of the building represents a triumph in terms of sustainability. Sustainability is a key element of architecture of the future.” “Australian consultants are second to none in the world in terms of having the technical knowledge and the expertise required to solve some of the very serious issues confronting the future.” The firm now has offices in Shanghai, Beijing, Hangzhou, Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City and Abu Dhabi, and work extensively throughout the Middle East. www.ptw.com.au Return to Business Club Australia success stories |
