Women in Export Trade Day 2007 - Austrade Helps Women Go Global
On 24 June Austrade held a highly successful Women in Export Trade Day as the lead-in event to the 12th APEC Women Leaders’ Network (WLN) meeting hosted by the Hon Julie Bishop MP, Minister for Education, Science and Training and Minister Assisting the Prime Minister for Women’s Issues, at Port Douglas from 25-27 June. The Austrade event, run in partnership with the Australian Government Office for Women, attracted a capacity attendance of 170 and provided an unparalleled occasion for businesswomen to network with experienced Australian exporters, other local businesswomen and international delegates from the APEC region.
The day opened with a keynote address by the Hon De-Anne Kelly MP, Parliamentary Secretary to the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister For Transport and Regional Services. This was followed by a panel session, chaired by Jenny Mathews, Austrade’s National Manager for Women in Export on the range of export opportunities for women in the APEC region. The panel featured New Zealand Minister for Small Business, Women and Commerce, the Hon Lianne Diazel; Tim Harcourt, Austrade’s Chief Economist as well as three successful women exporters Mary Nenke (Australia), Andrina Lever (Canada) and Pacita Juan (the Philippines), who were able to share their insights and experiences about exporting.
Throughout the day, an impressive line-up of Australian experts moderated panels and workshops with successful local exporters and international guests on how to:
- negotiate the practical steps to exporting
- use e-business and online technologies to enhance export success
- develop a business model to export services
- master cross-cultural communication and negotiation
The day culminated in a mini trade show of local Australian exporters with excellent commercial outcomes. Of the 16 Australian businesses exhibiting, 14 of those made export sales to Australian and APEC participants.
Due to the success of the event, it has been recommended that future meetings of the APEC Women Leaders Network include a Women in Export (WIE) Trade Day as part of their program.
The Trade Day was the latest in a series of initiatives undertaken as part of Austrade’s Women in Export program.
