Mahindra Satyam steps up operations, research in Australia

22 March 2013

India-based IT services provider Mahindra Satyam plans to more than triple its headcount in Australia to 5000 over the next two years as it sets up a centre of excellence and speeds acquisition plans, its new head of operations for Australia and New Zealand said.

Mahindra Satyam’s Australian operations will also increase revenues to 10 per cent of the global ICT firm’s total by 2016 from 8 per cent, according to Bobby Gupta, head of the Australia and New Zealand division.

He said Mahindra Satyam will establish a centre of excellence in Sydney or Melbourne in conjunction with a university, creating a conduit for the company’s expertise.

“We have a very strong foundation in Australia,” he told local press.

Mr Gupta said the company has started hiring university graduates in Australia as well as experienced professionals as part of its expansion plans.

Acquisitions are on the cards, and Mahindra Satyam will narrow its shortlist of five candidates down to one by the end of June, he said.

Gupta inherits a growing business from his predecessor Venki Prathivadi, who took the helm in 2009.

“There is no other place in the world where we have grown 25 per cent year on year,” Mr Prathivadi said earlier this year.

Mr Prathivadi said Mahindra Satyam can now export from Australia due to the willingness of organisations to co-innovate.

“I would say that Australia is like a cradle for our innovation. Gone are the days when things used to happen in North America and then we would bring things into Australia. Now we do stuff here and we take it to the rest of the world,” he said.

Mahindra Satyam’s blue-chip customers in Australia include Qantas, Orica, Suncorp, Optus, Vodafone and National Australia Bank (NAB).

NAB partnered with Mahindra Satyam for a virtual desktop strategy that allows the bank to locate people anywhere – including in India – but have its data stay in Australia, which is critical for its compliance obligations.

Mahindra Satyam is one of five large, Indian-based IT service companies active in Australia.

Mahindra Satyam is a global business consulting and information technology services company. It is part of the US$15.9 billion Mahindra Group which employs more than 155,000 people in over 100 countries, including Australia.
