Who are we?

The Australian Trade and Investment Commission (Austrade) contributes to Australia’s economic prosperity by helping Australian businesses, education institutions, tourism operators, governments and citizens as they:

  • develop international markets and promote international education
  • win productive foreign direct investment
  • strengthen Australia’s tourism industry
  • seek consular and passport services.

Our staff

Number 1056

Austrade staff at 30 June 2016, 69 per cent of whom were employed in client-focused operations in Australia and overseas. Staff turnover was 8.9 per cent and the gender balance was 57 per cent female and 43 per cent male.

What we do

Austrade promotes Australian exports and attracts investment into Australia by generating market information and insights, promoting Australian capabilities, making connections through an extensive global network of contacts, leveraging the ‘badge of government’ offshore, providing quality advice and services to exporters, education institutions and investors, and developing policy. Austrade also has responsibility for policies and programs to strengthen Australia’s tourism sector.

locations, including 10 offices in major Australian centres, complemented by 27 TradeStart offices, and 81 offices overseas in 48 different markets. Sixteen of those offices also provided consular services on behalf of the Australian Government.

Measuring our performance

In 2015–16, Austrade’s success in achieving its outcomes was measured against its purpose and criteria structure detailed in its 2015–16 corporate plan, and its key performance indicators detailed in the 2015–16 Portfolio Budget Statements for the Foreign Affairs and Trade portfolio. Results are summarised in Part 2 of this report, starting on page 18.
