Leonie is a lawyer by profession having been a Partner with Mallesons Stephen Jacques in their Sydney Banking and Finance practice. Leonie originally joined Austrade, in 1993 as Investment Commissioner for Japan and later North Asia responsible for inbound investment from the region to Australia.
After leaving Austrade in 1998, Leonie carried responsibility for leadership and management of a range of businesses in diverse sectors spanning call centers (Sitel Corporation-CEO Australia and COO Asia Pacific), consulting, training (General Manager Professional Service-Standards Australia, later SAI Global) and online legal publishing (CEO-TimeBase).
Leonie rejoined Austrade in February 2012 as Senior Trade and Investment Commissioner and Country Manager Japan she moved in 2016 to take up the position of General Manager South Asia Austrade carrying responsibility for India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan and Bangladesh, and assumed her current role in Singapore in January 2019.
Leonie holds a Bachelor of Arts, and a Bachelor of Law with Honours from Monash University, and a Master of Law from Columbia University in New York, and speaks Japanese.
