January 2018 student data released, enrolments increase 10.6 per cent

January 2018 international student statistics have been released by the Department of Education and Training, with results showing continued growth in students, enrolments and commencements.

Key results compared to January 2017 include:

  • International students in Australia increased by 11 per cent to 421,702, new commencements increased by 0.9 per cent to 44,468 and total enrolments by 10.6 per cent to 428,966.
  • The top three markets of China, India and Nepal accounted for just over three quarters of the overall increase in enrolments – all experiencing double digit growth (15.2 per cent, 11.9 per cent and 60.3 per cent respectively).
  • The fastest growing top 50 markets (by total enrolments) included Nepal (up 60.3 per cent), Mongolia (up 57.1 per cent), Colombia (up 30.3 per cent), Chile (up 28.2 per cent) and Brazil (up 28.2 per cent).
  • VET led percentage growth by sector with a 14.6 per cent increase, followed by higher education (12.5 per cent), schools (9.2 per cent) and ELICOS (1.5 per cent). Non-award enrolments experienced a small decrease of 6.9 per cent.

Things to note:

  1. Not all institutions commence in January. Enrolments for institutions commencing in later months will be included in the upcoming monthly data for February, March etc.
  2. The Department of Education and Training have discontinued their enrolment graphs and detailed pivot tables. The latest data and full time series are available by market, sector and state on the MIP Orbis dashboards and in the student data pivot tables.
