UK-Australia Space Bridge – South Australia

About event:

Home to the Australian Space Agency and over 80 space-related organisations, South Australia is the undisputed national centre of Australia’s space industry. South Australia is already home to the majority of operational control, procurement offices and research for Australian Defence Force space capabilities. The Australian Space Agency, the SmartSat Collaborative Research Centre (CRC), the South Australian Space Industry Centre (SASIC), the Australian Space Discovery Centre and Mission Control Centre are the centrepiece of a vibrant entrepreneurial ecosystem contributing to South Australia’s thriving space economy.

We are consolidating and refining its activities to best support the Australian Space Agency’s ambitious goal to triple the size of Australia’s domestic space industry to $12 billion by 2030 and create an additional 20,000 jobs by 2030. The Space Sector is an important element of the Growth State initiative, ensuring our state’s space industry journey continues its upward trajectory.

Building on the state’s strong starting position in the NewSpace economy, the South Australian Government will continue contributing to the growth rate of the national space industry and aim to increase the nation’s share of the global space economy.

The South Australian space sector currently represents:

  • Direct value-add to the economy of $140m
  • Workforce of 1,400 FTE
  • 64% annual growth rate in NewSpace sector since 2016

South Australia’s geography is well suited to ground-based infrastructure, including launch sites, ground stations and mission control centres, needed to support the large constellations of satellites to be launched in the next decade. In the last few months, local company Southern Launch has not only successfully facilitated the first private launch of a rocket from Australian soil, but has received approval for its test launch site at Whalers Way, well and truly paving the way for the establishment of a permanent orbital launch precinct. In 2022, the South Australian Government, in partnership with the SmartSat CRC and local companies Inovor Technologies and Myriota, will send a locally manufactured small satellite to low Earth orbit— the first State Government to ever embark on such a mission.

Register to see the phenomenal opportunities emerging for this leading space state, and see how partnerships are already emerging between the UK and South Australia.
