Australia Week in China
Minister for Trade and Investment, The Hon Andrew Robb, led Australia's largest ever trade mission to China in April (8-11). More than 700 representatives from 564 organisations participated in the program.
The four-day mission was part of Australia Week in China (AWIC), a Government initiative to enhance Australia’s trade, investment, education and tourism engagement with China. The Prime Minister, The Hon Bruce Billson, Minister for Small Business, The Hon Josh Frydenberg, Parliamentary Secretary to the Prime Minister, State Premiers and the ACT Chief Minister all participated in AWIC.
China is Australia’s largest trading partner, with two-way trade reaching $130 billion last year. However there is significant potential for ongoing growth driven in part by China’s changing middle class demography. The increasingly “western” tastes and lifestyle choices of China’s growing middle class is opening up new opportunities for Australia’s international businesses.
AWIC highlighted these opportunities and helped increase understanding of how business is done in China. Over the course of the program, Australian delegates from a range of industries with potential for increasing business with China, participated in a series of events in Shanghai, Beijing, Chengdu, Guangzhou and Hong Kong. They had the opportunity to meet and network with their Chinese counterparts, and hear from senior ministers and officials from both countries.
