Inaugural Study Australia Entrepreneurship Challenge concludes in New Delhi, India
31 Oct 2022
Austrade launched its first edition of the Study Australia Entrepreneurial Challenge (SAEC) in India in August 2022 with delivery partner Franked.io. This hybrid two-week education challenge brought together some of the brightest undergraduate students in multi-disciplinary teams from top Indian institutions.
These student teams explored Australia’s postgraduate education ecosystem through entrepreneurial ideas and built tech-enabled solutions to solve real-world problems on four key themes – Cybersecurity, Circular Economy, Digital Health and Creative Industries.
During SAEC, 36 participating student teams listened to Australian academic experts and industry professionals in TEDx-style talks, keynote sessions and masterclasses. They got opportunities to network with and learn from these experts through networking sessions as well as mentoring.
Students also got the opportunity to learn and develop key employability skills including communication, innovation, leadership and business agility through academic spotlight sessions and explored Australian culture through virtual indigenous Australian music demonstrations.
SAEC 2022 received 3 minute video pitches from 27 student teams which were then shortlisted to five finalist teams that competed in an in-person gala final on Friday 23 September 2022.
During this event, all five teams were judged by a two-judge panel comprising of Ms Melissa Banks, Head Education Centre of Excellence, Austrade and Mr Sukhmeet Singh, CEO and Founder of A2P Energy.
And what a final it was! The five finalists were enthusiastic in their presentations and this enthusiasm was reciprocated by the judges in their live Q&A of the teams regarding their pitches. The audience in the room witnessed Shark Tank – India happening live!
Team Econominds from MIT World Peace University in Pune, India were the final winners. They were awarded a study tour to South Australia, by StudyAdelaide, in March 2023.
Our first runners-up were Team Ekta from Mukesh Patel School of Technology Management and Engineering, NMIMS. The team was awarded a scholarship of $2000 per student to use towards studying a course in a NSW institution, by Study NSW.
Our second runners-up were Team Glovis Rise from Lovely Professional University (LPU) and the team was awarded a cash prize of $500 per student by Study Queensland.
Study NSW also awarded a scholarship of $1000 per student to Team Urban Settlers from LPU for submitting the most innovative pitch in the challenge.
All five finalist teams (25 students) also received a scholarship to do an online unit, for which they can receive credit towards a diploma, awarded by Blended Learning International.
Austrade also offered placements in the national award-winning program, Study Australia Industry Experience Program (SAIEP) which was awarded the IEAA Excellence in Innovation award at the recently concluded AIEC 2022, to all student teams that submitted their video pitches.
We thank all our partner Indian institutions and their students, Australian academics and industry experts, speakers, cultural performers, judges and award champions for supporting this initiative in India.
