New International enrolments in the US decline by 6.6 per cent in 2017-18

Open Doors have released 2017-18 data for international students at higher education institutions in the United States. Key results include:

  • Total enrolments increased by 1.5 per cent to 1,094,792, slower than last year’s growth of 3.4 per cent
  • New enrolments declined by 6.6 per cent, compared with a 3.2 per cent decline last year
  • China and India now account for over 50 per cent of enrolments
  • Saudi Arabia (-15.5 per cent), South Korea (-7.0 per cent) and Canada (-7.0 per cent) recorded to largest decreases in the top 25 markets
  • Nepal, Brazil, Nigeria and Vietnam were among the fastest growing markets
  • Undergraduate courses remain the most popular, growing by 0.8 per cent, while graduate courses fell by 2.1 per cent
