YTD December 2022 international student data released

The Department of Education has released year-to-date (YTD) December 2022 international student data.

There were 619, 371 international students on student visas for January to December 2022. This was 8% more than January to December 2021.

The top 5 countries account for 58% of international students.

These were:

  • China (25%)
  • India (16%)
  • Nepal (9%)
  • Colombia (4%)
  • Vietnam (4%)

There were 746,387 enrolments between January to December 2022, comprising:

  • 48% Higher Education (361,247)
  • 37% VET (270,838)
  • 11% ELICOS (79,362)
  • 3% Non-award (20,067)
  • 2% Schools (11,873)

Compared to the Jan-December 2021 period, enrolments were up for ELICOS (90%) and Non-award (48%) but slightly down for higher education (-1%), VET (-3%), and schools (-9%).

NOTE: Under current conditions, enrolment does not confirm if a student was in Australia at the time of reporting.
