YTD February 2022 international student data available

20 Apr 2022

The Department of Education, Skills and Employment has released year to date (YTD) February 2022 international student data. There were 422,095 international students on student visas for YTD February 2022, down 13 per cent compared to February 2021. Key results include:

  • Total enrolments decreased by 12.7 per cent, while commencements increased by 30.5 per cent
  • Higher education contributed to the growth in commencements with an increase of 85.5 per cent
  • All sectors experienced declines in enrolments
  • Top 20 markets by enrolments all experienced declines except for Hong Kong which saw a slight increase of 1.1 per cent
  • China, India and Nepal accounted for half (54.4 per cent) of all enrolments

NOTE: The February data should be interpreted with caution as most higher education and VET commencements for first semester typically take place in March each year.

Also note that under the current unprecedented conditions, enrolment does not confirm if a student was in Australia at the time of reporting.
