2020-21 Budget includes $1b in research funding

The 2020-21 Budget handed down by Treasurer Frydenburg on 6 October includes $1 billion in research funding to alleviate financial pressure on universities caused by COVID-19.
The funds will be delivered through the Research Support Package (RSP), taking total funding for 2021 to $3 billion.
Other notable education measures included:
- $5.8 million for scoping the University Research Commercialisation Scheme, to better translate and commercialise university research outputs
- $20 million over 4 years to enable the University of Adelaide to establish a Centre for Augmented Reasoning to develop machine-learning technologies
- $40 million over 4 years for the Strategic University Reform Fund (SURF) to develop targeted and innovative solutions between higher education institutions and industry in regional communities.
