MIP Insight: Onshore visa growth trends

This insight report analyses student visa grant data from the Department of Home Affairs to investigate the recent trends of onshore visa growth. It is complemented with insights from Austrade’s offshore network for key markets.
Summary findings include:
- Onshore grants have grown by over 20 per cent during 2017-18 and the first four months of the 2018-19 financial year, while offshore grants have slowed to 3.4 per cent and 7.7 per cent for the same period
- Results vary by sector; VET has the largest proportion of onshore visa grants to total visa grants, but onshore higher education grants are also increasing.
- 74 per cent of onshore applicants were previously on another student visa, 13 per cent on a visitor visa, 8 per cent working holiday and the remainder on temporary graduate or other visas
- China is the largest onshore applicant market, but India, Brazil, Nepal and other markets are growing rapidly
