EMDG to 30 June 2021
Under the Export Market Development Grants (EMDG) scheme you claim your promotional expenses after you have spent them.
EMDG is changing from 1 July 2021 to a new grants program. But there’s an overlap for exporters, consultants and agents who wish to apply for reimbursement under the EMDG scheme.
Expenses to 30 June 2021
For your expenses to 30 June 2021 the EMDG scheme continues to operate as before, reimbursing your business for eligible promotional expenses:
- From 1 July 2021, exporters can apply for reimbursement of expenses for the 2020-21 financial year.
- The lodgement period closes on 30 November 2021. Participating EMDG consultants can lodge an application on your behalf until 28 February 2022.
This ensures there’s no gap between the end of the reimbursement scheme and the introduction of the new program.
See EMDG at a glance (PDF) for an overview of the scheme up until 30 June 2021.
Expenses affected by COVID-19
If your promotional activities were affected by COVID-19 (such as trade show cancellations), we will treat these activities as having taken place. As such any incurred expenses for the 2020-21 financial year are eligible for reimbursement.
You cannot claim reimbursement of expenses already paid to you by a third party or that you are entitled to be paid (such as a refund or insurance).
A grant year
A grant year is the financial year (July to June) in which the expenses you are claiming occurred.
Under the EMDG scheme, you claim these grant-year expenses in the EMDG application for the next financial year. Thus for expenses you incurred in 2020–21 you will be able to apply for reimbursement through EMDG from 1 July 2021 for the financial year 2021–22.
