EMDG to 30 June 2021

Status: The Export Market Development Grants (EMDG) scheme closed permanently on 28 February 2022.

The new EMDG program came into effect from 1 July 2021 – see EMDG from 1 July 2021. It replaces this reimbursement scheme.

EMDG reimbursement scheme statistics

For the 2021-22 financial year, we:

  • received 3,473 EMDG claims
  • assessed 3,064 applications
  • paid grants to the value of $74.6 million.

Note: These figures are correct as of 10 May 2022.

Expenses to 30 June 2021

Under the former EMDG reimbursement scheme, you claimed your promotional expenses after you spent them.

For your expenses to 30 June 2021, the EMDG scheme reimbursed your business for eligible promotional expenses:

  • From 1 July 2021, exporters could apply for reimbursement of expenses for the 2020-21 financial year.
  • The lodgement period closed on 30 November 2021. Participating EMDG consultants could lodge an application on your behalf up until 28 February 2022.

This ensured there wasn’t a gap between the end of the reimbursement scheme and the introduction of the new program.

Expenses affected by COVID-19

If your promotional activities were affected by COVID-19 (such as trade show cancellations), we treated those activities as having taken place. As such any incurred expenses for the 2020-21 financial year were eligible for reimbursement.

You couldn’t claim reimbursement of expenses already paid to you by a third party or that you were entitled to be paid (such as a refund or insurance).

A grant year

A grant year is the financial year (July to June) in which the expenses you were claiming occurred.

Under the EMDG scheme, you claimed these grant-year expenses in the EMDG application for the next financial year. Thus for expenses you incurred in 2020–21 you were able to apply for reimbursement through EMDG from 1 July 2021 for the financial year 2021–22.
