Supporting Australia’s Exhibiting Zoos and Aquariums Program
The Australian Government will be committing $45 million to extend the Supporting Australia’s Exhibiting Zoos and Aquariums (SAEZA) Program. This will allow the program to continue until 30 June 2022.
This additional assistance will continue to provide eligible zoos and aquariums support to maintain their animal populations and retain essential capability while they continue to suffer significant revenue losses due to COVID-19.
The program guidelines have been updated and are available under key documents.
The $94.6 million Supporting Australia’s Exhibiting Zoos and Aquariums Program is part of the $1 billion Relief and Recovery Fund that is helping sectors, regions and communities disproportionately affected by the economic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Program provides funding to eligible exhibiting zoos, aquariums and wildlife parks to maintain their animal populations where their tourism revenue has been affected by the travel and social distancing restrictions in place to limit the spread of COVID-19.
Austrade administers the Program, which was developed in consultation with the Zoo and Aquarium Association (ZAA), the Department of Agriculture, Water and Environment, and state and territory tourism organisations (STOs).

Eligible applicants are exhibiting zoos and aquariums that are important at a national, state or regional level as they contribute to conservation and presentation of animals and drive interstate and international visitation. Austrade consulted with ZAA and the STOs to develop the list of eligible applicants for the Program. Eligible applicants are listed in Annexure 1 of the Program Guidelines – new applicants cannot apply.
Applications for Payment 6 (July to September 2021) opened on Monday 5 July 2021 and closed 11.59pm AEST, Monday 2 August 2021.
Applications for Payment 7 (October to December 2021) will open Monday 27 September 2021 and will close 11:59 AEDST, Sunday 14 November 2021.
Applications for Payment 8 (January to March 2022) will open Tuesday 4 January 2022 and will close 11:59 AEDST, Sunday 20 February 2022.
Applications for Payment 9 (April to June 2022) will open Monday 28 March 2022 and will close 11:59 AEST, Sunday 15 May 2022.
