Supporting Australia’s Exhibiting Zoos and Aquariums Program

On 11 March 2021, the Australian Government announced an extension to the Supporting Australia’s Exhibiting Zoos and Aquariums Program for a further six months.

The funding will continue to support eligible zoos, aquariums and wildlife parks whose revenue stream has been impacted by COVID-19 restrictions and will be expanded to cover animal transfer costs, where the transfer is necessary due to an animal welfare issue.

Claims for payments covering April to June 2021 (Payment 5) will open for eligible zoos and aquariums in early April. Claims for payments covering July to September 2021 (Payment 6) will open mid-year.

An updated version of the program guidelines and key dates will be published by end of March.

In April 2020, the Australian Government announced the $94.6 million Supporting Australia’s Exhibiting Zoos and Aquariums Program which was to run for 6 months from May 2020. This assistance is part of the $1 billion Relief and Recovery Fund that is helping sectors, regions and communities disproportionately affected by the economic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Program continues to provide funding to eligible exhibiting zoos, aquariums and wildlife parks to maintain their animal populations where their tourism revenue has been affected by the travel and social distancing restrictions in place to limit the spread of COVID-19.

Austrade will continue to administer the Program, which was developed in consultation with the Zoo and Aquarium Association (ZAA), the Department of Agriculture, Water and Environment, and state and territory tourism organisations (STOs).

Current program information can be found below under ‘Key documents’. Austrade will contact all eligible applicants directly to provide information on the application process.
