04 Dec 2018

Japanese resources company INPEX was awarded the 2018 Trade, Tourism and Investment Minister’s Investment Award.

Minister Birmingham presented the award at the Australian Export Awards ceremony in Canberra on Tuesday 27 November.

Award nominees included Canberra Metro (consortium with companies from China, Germany, Japan and the UK), Datacom (New Zealand), Hosen Capital and New Hope Group (China), Minor International (Thailand), MTR Corporation (Hong Kong), Ovolo Hotel Group (Hong Kong) and Rinnai (Japan).

The Minister for Trade, Tourism and Investment’s Investment Award honours an international company or joint venture making an enduring contribution to Australia’s economy.

These finalists are creating or safeguarding employment; cultivating innovation or developing new industry capability in Australia; facilitating Australian industry expansion within global supply chains; and making a difference to the local community.

INPEX was recognised for its Ichthys liquefied natural gas (LNG) project, which will help make Australia the world’s largest exporter of LNG by 2020.

Over its 40-year lifespan the Ichthys project is expected to generate A$195 billion in exports, A$190 billion in additional GDP for Australia, A$73 billion in taxation revenue for federal, state and territory governments and 1,800 full-time jobs during 2012–50.

The Investment Award category was introduced to the Australian Export Awards in 2016 to recognise the critical role that foreign direct investment plays in providing the capital required for Australia to grow and prosper. Previous winners include Boeing (US) in 2016 and NEC (Japan) in 2017.

Additional information on the nominees and their investments in Australia can be found on the Investment Award website.
