Intertek has opened a new Minerals Global Centre of Excellence in Western Australia. The facility is in Perth, home to many of the world’s minerals and mining giants. It can process 2.5 million samples a year.

Intertek Minerals’ largest laboratory in the world

UK-based Intertek Minerals provides mineral testing services. The Global Centre of Excellence is the largest Intertek Minerals laboratory in the world.

It consolidates Intertek’s minerals business into a 20,000m2, multi-service facility housing over 500 staff. It will also offer on-site access to Intertek’s other business lines.

Addressing the global backlog in sample testing

The Centre is a technology and innovation hub with access to world-class technical expertise. It will provide mining and minerals businesses with assurance, testing, inspection and certification services.

The Centre offers multi-element analysis for:

  • iron ore and bulk commodities
  • gold
  • rare earths
  • base metals
  • platinum group elements
  • battery minerals.

John Fowler, Intertek’s Senior Vice President of Minerals and Exploration & Production, says the Centre’s advanced capabilities will help address the global backlog in mineral testing.

‘The new centre’s increased instrumentation and new robotic automated systems provide Intertek Minerals with the capability to analyse over 2.5 million samples per year.’

The Centre has 8 robotic automated systems, including sample preparation, XRF and wet chemistry systems. Two Chrysos PhotonAssay units will provide environmentally friendly analysis of gold and complementary elements.
