Understanding Australia's FinTech Ecosystem

A FinTech webinar "Understanding Australia’s Fintech Ecosystem" was held on 4 May 2016 to an online audience from Australia, Singapore, India, Indonesia, Malaysia and Korea.

The event attracted participants from various sectors of the FinTech community. These included start-ups, incubators, investors, and policy-makers. Speakers at the webinar were:

  1. KPMG’s Global Co-Lead for Fintech Business, Mr Ian Pollari, presented an overview of the Australian landscape and offered suggestions on how the banking sector could leverage realtime data and analytics to create innovative payment platforms and new business models, and in turn contribute to raising overall cost efficiency and agility in doing business.
  2. Mr Ash Brosnan from the office of NSW Department of Premier and Cabinet provided an update of accelerator programs and initiatives supported by the New South Wales government to foster innovation in the financial services sector.

Both speakers were of the view that while innovation, talent and venture capital investments were key to successful nurturing of the fintech ecosystem, focus on issues such as cyber security and data protection should also not be overlooked given the vagaries of online financial transactions and engagements.
