Thailand: E-commerce growing in ASEAN’s second largest economy

Thailand’s e-commerce market has grown significantly in recent years to
become the second largest business-to-consumer e-commerce market in South
East Asia, creating strong opportunities for Australian business.

The guide provides an overview of the digital retail sector in Thailand,

The growth of the Thai e-commerce market is underpinned by the Thai
Government’s support for digital technologies, and a young, internet-savvy,
mobile-first population that is comfortable using social apps such as
Facebook and LINE to purchase goods.
The market’s size and potential has attracted e-commerce giants such as
Alibaba and JD.com to set up operations in the country, as well as
encouraged local firms to innovate.
With online sales growing 10 per cent annually, Susan Kahwati, Austrade’s
Senior Trade Commissioner in Bangkok, says Australian exporters will find a
receptive consumer market.
‘Australian goods are well known and well regarded in Thailand, which gives
our exporters a head start,’ she says. ‘More consumers are opting to shop
online than in stores, and new technologies are changing the retail
experience. It’s an opportune time for Australian exporters to enter or
expand their online presence in Thailand.’
