Family business sells gourmet honey to luxury UK store
The Gum Tree Apiary is a family owned beekeeping enterprise with its roots firmly entrenched in traditions that have been passed down through generations to Paul Koch, producing a range of gourmet honeys now available in the UK.
When this Western Australian company first set its sights on the UK, the honey was still in the hive and a retail-ready product under conception.
Twelve months later the first order of Jarrah honey arrived at London's prestigious Fortnum & Mason and major retailer discussions are underway for the company’s Jarrah to Red Gum, York Gum and other varietals.
"Market research indicated that we needed a strong USP to compete in such a crowded market," said Desiree Koch. "Tests confirmed that our Jarrah honey has a total activity of 20+ and is one of the purest mono-floral honeys available; so we were confident that we had a sufficiently strong proposition to invest in our UK export strategy."
“Strategic advice from Austrade in London and Perth provided key market and retailer insight. The team provided referrals to specialist agencies & service providers - from labelling and import regulations to lawyers and accountants for setting up our UK business," said Leanne Van Daele, who set up the UK operation and leads the team’s UK sales and marketing. "Swift access to the right organisations helped us get our product to market in a relatively short timescale - and that's got to be valuable."
