Australian Government Agency Responsibilities for International Education, 1 July 2010

Austrade is responsible for the international marketing and promotion of Australian education and training.

Australian Education International (AEI), Department of Industry, Innovation, Science, Research and Tertiary Education, will continue to lead strategic policy, regulation and government to government engagement in the international education sector.

An outline of the key responsibilities for the international marketing and promotion of education include:

Austrade AEI
Intergovernmental co-operation
  • Contribute to the Council of Australian Governments’ International Student Strategy for Australia through the Study in Australia web portal studyinaustralia.gov.au.
International cooperation in education and training
  • Government-to-government policy engagement.
  • Bilateral cooperation including agreements, Joint Working Groups, educational/training input to free trade agreement negotiations, and multilateral forums.
  • Support for academic and institutional policy engagement and exchange.
Market Information Package (MIP)
  • Manage the MIP under austrade.gov.au/mip including provision of market intelligence, opportunities, events and news alerts for Australian education providers.
International education quality and regulation
  • Manage the Education Services for Overseas Students (ESOS) Act 2000 and associated legislative framework and activities.
  • Implement Government’s response to the Baird Review.
  • Supporting the implementation of Government policy in relation to the higher education and vocational education and training sectors.
Research and information
  • Collate information and develop reports concerning the international marketing and promotion of Australian education for dissemination through the MIP.
International education research and information
  • Develop international education statistics and research
  • Manage international student data (for publication by Austrade through its Market Information Package).
  • Provide information on host country education policy.
Scholarships Scholarships
  • Manage the Endeavour Awards.
  • Liaise and engage with foreign government bodies on inbound and outbound scholarship opportunities
Education Agents
  • Provide information and tailored research about Education Agents to Australian education providers.
  • Advise education agents seeking to represent Australian education providers, including referral advice to education agent training programs.
Education Agents
  • Develop and provide information on regulatory requirements and Australian education issues to education agents.
  • Monitor provider obligations under the ESOS Act.
  • Engage with other governments concerning overseas education agents.
Future Unlimited 
  • Manage the Future Unlimited brand, including licensing and guidelines.
  • Maintain the studyinaustralia.gov.au website.
Qualifications recognition
  • Manage international qualifications recognition including educational and professional recognition information services and support.
Alumni
  • Maintain and update information on Australia alumni overseas on studyinaustralia.gov.au website.
  • Support for alumni networking communities and associations and Australian institutions requiring assistance in profiling, developing and organising alumni.
Intergovernmental cooperation and public diplomacy
  • Lead the implementation of the Council of Australian Governments’ International Student Strategy.
  • Manage the Joint Committee on International Education Secretariat.
  • Ensure a whole-of-government approach to international education.
Media
  • Liaise with Australian and foreign media to promote and market the Australian international education sector, including Future Unlimited.
Media
  • Liaise with Australian and foreign media on Australian international education policy and regulatory matters.
