Accelerating sustainable mining in the Philippines

Australian METS companies met with mining industry leaders to learn about trade opportunities.

Australia’s leading mining equipment, technology and services (METS) companies explored opportunities in the Philippines on Austrade’s first sustainable mining mission to the Philippines.

Co-led by Daniel Boyer, Austrade’s Deputy CEO for Trade and Investment, and Vanessa Haberland, Austmine’s interim CEO, the mission saw Australian delegates connecting directly with Filipino mining companies, customers and industry leaders. The 4-day event in November gave them insights into the opportunities and challenges within the mining sector.

For Australia, the mission was a pivotal opportunity to leverage its world-leading METS expertise to assist the Filipino mining sector to adopt sustainable mining solutions and practices, while deepening trade relations and collaboration.

The delegation comprised 34 representatives from 27 METS companies, along with representatives from Austmine, Australian states and territory governments, and industry associations. The program included sessions in Manila and Baguio, the latter anchored to the Annual National Mine Safety and Environment Conference, one of the Philippines’ largest mining events.

Throughout the mission, the Australian mining industry demonstrated its leadership in innovation and sustainable mining practices and showcased its ability to meet evolving industry demands.

The need for sustainable mining solutions

Recent reforms in the Philippines have created a more mining-friendly environment. These reforms include an enhanced fiscal regime and digitised permit processes, which have increased investment certainty and reduced bureaucratic hurdles for foreign companies

Australian companies that emphasise responsible mining practices, sustainable operations, and local community engagement are well positioned to benefit from trade and partnership opportunities.

With renewed interest in the Philippines’ mineral resources sector and strong government support for responsible mining, the mission promises to unlock value for both countries, boost jobs, and contribute to the global transition toward renewable energy technologies.

The mission not only strengthens bilateral ties but also positions Australian mining companies at the forefront of the Philippines’ sustainable mining future.
