SYDNEY – 10 March 2026: The Australian Trade and Investment Commission (Austrade) is supporting a major delegation of companies from the United Kingdom, Europe, the United States and Asia to attend the 2026 Renewable Fuels Summit, which opens today.
Australia is positioning itself as a stable and reliable partner to meet growing global demand for renewable fuels and biomethane, attracting significant interest from potential investors.
Vast quantities of diverse biogenic and non-biogenic feedstocks, a network of refineries and fuel storage terminals, strong interest from the aviation and transport industries and government support programs underpin Australia’s leading position.
“The development of a domestic low carbon liquid fuels (LCLF) industry will create jobs, growth and new export opportunities in regional Australia, reducing reliance on imported fuels and strengthening fuel security while helping to decarbonise hard-to-abate sectors,” said Dr Frances van Ruth, Head of Investment – Europe, Middle East and Africa and Net Zero Investment Lead.
“Australia’s refinery infrastructure and international ports position it as a potential refuelling hub with workforce capabilities that are well-suited to large-scale low carbon liquid fuel production and export. This has the potential to play a crucial role in supply to our Asia-Pacific neighbours that do not have this capability,” said Dr van Ruth.
“Sustainable aviation fuels will also play a key role in the transition to net zero.”
Australian Government support programs for low carbon liquid fuels include:
Australia is also a natural candidate for biomethane adoption thanks to its abundant feedstocks and organic residues from the agribusiness sector. Biomethane can be used as a drop-in replacement for natural gas and is widely used by industry, commercial businesses and households in Australia. Australia’s gas infrastructure can be readily adapted for biomethane injection, and pipeline operators are already facilitating injection into the grid.
The 2026 Renewable Fuels Summit delegation includes a diverse range of companies spanning different parts of the renewable fuels and biomethane ecosystem with proven success in more established global markets.
Across the week Austrade will provide opportunities for delegates to connect with potential partners, visit key facilities and better understand the policy frameworks and government support programs available.
Attracting foreign investment that supports the delivery of Australia’s emissions reduction targets is a key priority for Austrade. In 2024-25, Austrade attracted 73 foreign investment projects that will help accelerate Australia's transition to net zero.
