Australian marbled lamb carves up Malaysia’s fine dining scene

Gundagai Lamb’s premium marbled lamb is thrilling Malaysia’s top chefs and restauranteurs.

The sensational flavour of Australian marbled lamb has mouths watering and chefs raving in Malaysia’s high-end dining scene.

Fine food importer Indoguna Malaysia debuted Gundagai Lamb’s GLQ5+ marbled lamb at an exclusive tasting event in Kuala Lumpur in January. Supported by Austrade, the event was part of the Australian Government’s Lamb Sheepmeat Phase Out (LSPO) initiative.

The launch of Australian marbled lamb in Malaysia is a strategic initiative to introduce and secure a foothold for Australian premium products in the country’s luxury culinary sector. Other premium Australian brands in Malaysia include Penfolds Wines, Random Harvest Gourmet and Huon Aquaculture.

According to Fitch Solutions Company, food spending in Malaysia is forecast to increase by 6.3% in 2026, reaching MYR336.5 billion (US$81.9 billion), as demand for premium and imported foods rises among young, affluent consumers. Fitch says “premiumisation” is expected to create prospects for high-value food categories as the middle class reaps the benefits of Malaysia’s economic growth. Australian lamb the premium choice

Marbled lamb, often known as “Wagyu-style” lamb, offers melt-in-the-mouth tenderness and a succulent and velvety texture due to its fine, intramuscular fat streaks, known as marbling.

The Gundagai Lamb Quality GLQ) Score is an industry-first grading system developed by Gundagai Lamb. The system measures the Lean Meat Yield (LMY), Intramuscular Fat (IMF) and Animal Health of its lamb. The GLQ5+ score signifies the highest level of marbling and quality.

The tasting event was hosted at Bref by Darren Chin, one of Malaysia’s top restaurants. The restaurant’s chef-patron Lim Wei Han kept his recipes simple to showcase the premium lamb’s exceptional flavour and juiciness. Guests, including local culinary professionals and media representatives, enjoyed the different ways in which the lamb was cooked and presented. Chefs were already discussing ways to feature the lamb on their menus.

‘The balance of marbling and lean meat in Gundagai Lamb is exceptional,’ says Chef Han. ‘It gives you structure, moisture and flavour all at once, which is something chefs really look for. It’s a lamb that performs beautifully with simple techniques and rewards precision in the kitchen.’
