Southeast Asia is a region of immense opportunity, young consumers and grown wealth. It's diverse, but if you're prepared to adapt, it can be quite transformational for your business.
Hi, my name is Max Buontempo. I'm the managing director of Roma Foods Products, we’re Australian owned and operated food manufacturer located in Carrum Downs, Victoria. Roma Foods makes a range of allergen free and gluten free products, from fresh breads to pasta to baking mixes.
Our mission is to create great foods for healthier living, and we also believe food brings people together. That's why we've been manufacturing gluten-free and free-from-allergens foods for over 40 years.
We looked at Southeast Asia as one of the opportunities for us. It's one of the fastest growing economies in the world, with nearly 700 million people, and a rapidly growing middle class.
There’s rising demand for healthy, safe and premium options and Australian made foods are highly regarded.
We found out that working with a company called FairPrice Group, which is a large retail organisation in Singapore, was a great footstep for us to get into to kick start our business in Southeast Asia. We're now exporting to nine of the 11 Southeast Asian countries.
It's helped us to grow our sales, strengthen our brand and become more agile. Austrade has been a great partner. They've provided market insights and practical support like technical guidance on halal certifications for Pasta Roma.
In Indonesia, for example, our technical team were having some difficulties around obtaining this certification. We needed to work with Austrade in particular to get a better understanding on how the compliance and regulations were required.
Austrade connected us with the right technical support, including contact details with certified bodies in Australia so we can meet the local requirements. And now we're successfully exporting to Indonesia. Austrade has helped us with numerous trade shows, including the trade show, which led to an introduction to our new Thailand distributor, which is one of the latest and most successful exports to Southeast Asia.
The advice I'd give for businesses going to Southeast Asia is do your homework, be patient and find strong partners. Certainly leverage Austrade they can save you years of trial and error.
Roma Foods’ global expansion is going to continue with covering the remainder of the Southeast Asian markets, which includes the Philippines and East Timor, while continuing to expand globally.
Our goal is to be the most trusted, gluten free, allergen free food partner around the world.
