Indonesia Landing Pad connects Aussie tech companies with Indonesian healthcare leaders

Australian solutions that are accessible and configurable can help deliver essential healthcare services in Indonesia.

Austrade’s second Indonesia Landing Pad program bought 7 prominent Australian health tech companies to Indonesia from 26–28 May for a curated in-market immersion program.

Delegates had tailored opportunities to engage with clinicians and industry leaders from across Indonesia’s growing healthcare sector. They also met with industry mentors, regulators and legal experts to:

  • deepen their understanding of Indonesia’s healthcare transformation needs
  • calibrate their go-to-market strategies
  • develop numerous commercial leads.

Closed-door pitching with senior industry executives is a signature component of the Indonesia Landing Pad immersion program. Delegates benefitted from direct feedback on product market fit and localisation strategies, followed by tailored business-matching with prospective partners and customers in-market.

A highlight of the program was a site visit to workshop digital health solutions with executives and clinicians at Indonesia’s growing Bethsaida Hospital group. The site visit allowed the cohort to connect with users, observe market needs and explore how their products could improve healthcare provision in Indonesia.

‘This Landing Pad program has been stunning, from coordination and sessions to venues, the agenda built and partners,’ says Babak Asgari, Director of Business Development for Optain Health. ‘It provided a good 360-degree discussion around development, partnership, deployment and scaling.’

The passion, plus there's a big ambition in Indonesia for improving the health care system. The ministry and all the players can see the stepping stones to get to the improvement state.

The other bit is the strong preparedness to use regulation to drive behaviour change. There's a readiness to use regulation as a tool: that ambition, the passion, the attitude of wanting to get on and do things that sets Indonesia apart.

The Indonesian market at this time is such an exciting place. You're seeing the convergence of a number of big factors. You've got a framework of legislation driving the adoption of electronic medical records, and that's something that we're really passionate about.

You've also got big initiatives like the SatuSehat coming in, and the experience that we've had in Australia with my health record and the NEHR in Singapore, I think we're well positioned to deliver on.

Everywhere I have been and to everyone I have spoken, they are very welcoming to AI based solutions through innovation. They see the value in adopting new technology to further advance their healthcare solutions, and provision of healthcare. In Indonesia the geographical challenge can be something that we can help address especially in remote and under-served areas to get access to cutting edge healthcare at minimum cost.

Austrade landing pads has been an amazing opportunity for Five Faces. We've been contemplating coming into the Indonesian market and exploring it for at least 2 years now. This has given us that opportunity to take the first step in coming into the country, the opportunity to meet with real potential customers and have that facetime with them. The program that they've brought together is incredible and nothing that we could have ever achieved on our own.

Austrade representatives have been very supportive, with a lot of local market intelligence, and local networks which has been invaluable to us as a business.

The virtual program was extremely informative. We learned a lot about doing business in Indonesia, current medical tech requirements. So, it was a great opening.

The landing pad has been great. The sessions that we had leading up to this trip have answered just about every question I think, which is amazing. I have to say back in Australia it takes a long time to get this sort of information. As far as keeping developing in this area with Austrade, to have that go-to agency to ask questions, get introduced to other people that can obviously answer our questions is really important. So, great to have Austrade on board with Biomorphik.

Landing Pad brings tech solutions closer to market

Australia’s cutting-edge health capabilities are well positioned to advance Indonesia’s digital health transformation efforts. One key takeaway from the discussion was how accessible and configurable solutions can enhance the delivery of essential healthcare services, as well as tools to improve public health outcomes.

‘With an underserved population here, our system offering in-home and community testing is a perfect solution for this region,’ says Nathaniel Peek, CEO of Biomorphik.

Delegates are also building on their participation in the Indonesia Landing Pad 6-week virtual bootcamp by engaging with their in-market mentors. This practical, industry-informed advice has helped them to better position their products for success in Indonesia.

‘The idea that you are bringing a mentor to help you deliver what you’ve got to do throughout the program has been especially insightful,’ says Douglas Murray, Managing Director, Meditech. ‘Well done on getting the group of mentors that you have.’

The Southeast Asia Landing Pads program supports Australian export-ready tech scale-ups to deepen their understanding of opportunities in the region, refine their go-to-market strategies and connect with opportunities, customers and partners. Register your interest in future programs.
