Consultation Paper: Independent Review of the EMDG Program

The Minister for Trade, Senator the Hon Don Farrell has asked Timothy Yeend to conduct an independent review of the Export Market Development Grants (EMDG) program. This is in accordance with section 106A of the Export Market Development Grants Act 1997 where an independent review is required to be conducted every 5 years. 

Purpose

The purpose of the consultation is to gather insights from businesses and industry representatives on their experiences with the EMDG program over the last 5 years. It also invites broader views from key stakeholders with an interest in trade, export or the EMDG program.

The consultation process

This paper outlines the consultation process and shows how you can participate in 3 ways:

  • Make a submission by email to emdgreview@austrade.gov.au or via the online submission form – open from 15 July to 12 September 2025
  • Complete an online survey – open from 15 July to 15 August 2025
  • Attend a meeting – in-person, online or stakeholder group meeting – from 25 August to 12 September 2025.

Key areas for consultation

Guiding questions are provided for each of the 5 key areas for consultation:

  1. Quality of current program processes and delivery with a focus on applicants’ experience
  2. Role and value of representative bodies activities' in achieving export outcomes
  3. Whole-of-Australian-Government support to SMEs
  4. Any other matters that may support the effective operation of the EMDG program
