Australian space firms recently connected with potential clients at the 41st Space Symposium in Colorado Springs in the United States.
Held in April, the event attracts industry leaders, government agencies and military officials from around the world. It provided a platform for Australian companies to showcase their capabilities and explore diversification opportunities in the US, the UK, Canada, Southeast Asia, North Asia and Europe.
Austrade hosted 29 space companies at the Australia Pavilion in collaboration with the Australian Space Agency, the South Australia Space Industry Centre, and the Space Industry Association of Australia (SIAA), a Trade Diversification Network member.
This was the first Austrade-led Australian delegation and national pavilion at the Space Symposium. The visit was made possible through the Accessing New Markets Initiative, a $50 million program to help Australian exporters diversify their export markets and to take advantage of new export growth opportunities.
‘There is a lot of space in Australia – and that’s not just a geographical reference,’ says Paul Burfield, Austrade Senior Trade and Investment Commissioner.
‘Our national pavilion gave us the opportunity to demonstrate how Australia is leveraging geography, our longstanding US partnership, and genuine leading-edge capability to become a launch and return destination for the world.’
The Southern Launch team was one of 29 Australian space companies at the 41st Space Symposium.
Australian space leaders attended 150 business-to-business meetings at the event, including with international space agencies, large multinational space and defence leaders, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), and space military representatives. A selection of Australian space companies also met with the Governor of Colorado Jared Polis.
Austrade and its partners hosted 2 business networking receptions where Australian space companies could mingle with more than 450 targeted invitees. These engagements generated valuable connections and partnership opportunities for the Australian space industry.
Australian companies are already partnering with international space firms. Among the attendees was Southern Launch, an Australian space mission provider that operates 2 orbital and sub-orbital spaceports in South Australia. ‘Australia has a strong reputation in the global space industry,’ says Tamara Bell, Austrade Global Engagement Manager. ‘Our space sector combines advanced technology, vast geography and practical problem-solving to support missions on Earth and beyond. Most recently, Australian science and space agencies had crucial roles in NASA’s historic Artemis II mission.
‘International space organisations are always looking for innovative solutions and services, as we saw at the Space Symposium. Australian space exporters can reach out to Austrade to learn more about diversifying to markets such as North America, Europe and Asia.’
