Australia and India have marked another significant milestone in their growing education partnership with 4 new initiatives that strengthen institutional collaboration, expand transnational education opportunities and support the development of future-ready talent across both countries.
The announcements reflect the strong momentum in Australia–India education engagement and a shared commitment to creating new pathways for students, researchers and industry through deeper people-to-people, academic and economic connections.
Victoria University has received a Letter of Approval from India’s University Grants Commission (UGC) to start operations at its international branch campus in Gurugram, a significant step towards its planned launch in 2026. The campus will provide Indian students with greater access to Australian higher education and internationally recognised qualifications without leaving India.
Flinders University has also taken a major step towards establishing a campus in Bengaluru after receiving a Letter of Intent from the UGC. Subject to regulatory approvals, the campus is expected to open in 2027, further strengthening educational links between Australia and India and expanding opportunities for students to benefit from Australian education offerings.
These developments demonstrate the growing confidence of Australian institutions in India’s education landscape and support the shared vision of increasing collaboration in higher education, research and innovation.

To support Australian universities establishing campuses in India, Austrade and the Department of Education have launched a Community of Practice for International Branch Campuses.
The initiative will bring institutions together to share knowledge, regulatory insights and market intelligence, while fostering stronger engagement with Indian education partners, government stakeholders and industry.
By facilitating collaboration and the exchange of best practices, the Community of Practice will ensure engagement is coordinated and help strengthen the foundations for long-term, sustainable education partnerships between the 2 countries.
Recognising the importance of industry engagement in higher education, Austrade and the Department of Education are delivering the Industry–Academia Employability Project. This initiative was originally announced by the Business Council of Australia (BCA) and Universities Australia (UA).
By bringing together universities and employers, the initiative aims to create a talent pipeline for Australian and Indian businesses, while supporting graduates returning from Australia and those studying at Australian campuses in India.
The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) was a recent signatory to the initiative, expanding the reach of the project to more than 300,000 enterprises represented by CII.
These announcements represent the next phase of the Australia–India education relationship, one that extends beyond student mobility to encompass transnational education, institutional collaboration, industry engagement and workforce development.
