Australia has a world class pedigree and reputation for sustainable fishery management both in terms of ………..commercial fishing and also in agriculture and that’s a platform that’s been established for some time if you like from catch through to the plate.

Perhaps the best way that I can explain about the Australia’s pedigree, and well-recognised qualification in sustainable fisheries management is probably best describe in the form of acronyms PRETSS. P standing for policies where Australia has established over many years, very robust and well-disciplined policies for managing fisheries both ……and agriculture, That contains research capabilities in understanding the breeding stock and how to preserve the breeding stock in terms of equipment and technology transfer, Australian application there has unable that Australian seafood can be processed and delivered all over the world in pristine world class condition and then finally I guess when it came down to human input, Australia has proven capabilities in both skills and training to insure that people fully understand and obviously work together to providing world class management and farming and processing of Australian seafood.

There is no doubt the Indian seafood industry is large and well established in fact the Indian seafood industry would be the 8th largest industry in the world, in fact it employs well in the excess of 50 million people and there is something like 9 states of India which contributes the major proportion of Indian catch and processing of seafood. However it’s understood within industry and certainly recognised by countries like Australia. There is wonderful opportunity for many of the best practice in sustainable fishery management to be adapted and adopted by Indian seafood sector to bring about greater efficiency both in terms of the quality and the processing and the packaging and of course marketing of Indian seafood whether we talk shell fish, whether we talk Finn fish or whether we talk agriculture. So I will give you some examples, Australia has a got a wealth of experience in the area of, for example live lobster holding and ability to be able to reduce some mortality of ….. lobster and we believe that’s an area that would benefit the Indian lobster industry. If we talk about other areas to do with the handling and packaging of seafood, and for that matter, value adding of seafood. There too we see tremendous opportunity for Australian collaboration to be able to contribute greatly to put in both value and I think great sustainability into India’s fishing sector.

Well I think the Indian seafood industry can engage in Australia in number of ways. It is just starting point. I would encourage the sector to engage with us here in Austrade. We got a well-established network across India. Many of our staff are working in the…….fishing management project team that was setup. Will be able to provide a very effective channel to engage with Australian companies that have a both capability and of course appetite to engage with Indian seafood companies to develop meaningful and sustainable relationship that can lead to win-win for both the parties.
