India’s healthcare sector is seeking solutions that support a move from reactive care to a prevention-led, early diagnosis and technology-enabled healthcare model.
This shift is good news for Australian medtech and digital health companies that offer capabilities aligned to India’s needs.
‘India is a large, dynamic market that’s ready to adopt innovation,’ says Mary Overington, Trade and Investment Commissioner, Austrade. ‘It offers scale, clinical diversity, and the ability to rapidly implement and operationalise solutions. For Australian medtech and digital health companies, India is a compelling opportunity.’
Australia’s capabilities in medtech and digital health were on show to Indian healthcare leaders at 2 recent events. Hosted by Austrade, a nine-member Indian delegation travelled to Australia to attend AusMedtech 2026 in Perth and the Digital Health Festival in Melbourne. Their presence underscored the depth of interest and commitment from India’s healthcare ecosystem.
The 2 events allowed the delegation to engage with hospitals, researchers, industry, and government across Perth and Melbourne, and explore the technologies and solutions on offer from Australian medtech and digital health companies.
At AusMedtech, Austrade Business Development Manager Sangeetha Krishnamoorthy joined a panel titled “From Australia to the World: Practical Pathways to Global Expansion”, focused on practical advice for companies considering their next international market.
During the trip, delegates also visited the Harry Perkins Institute, the Royal Perth Hospital and East Metropolitan Health Services’ HIVE (an inpatient remote monitoring service). These visits enabled them to see how technology is applied in clinical settings. They also visited Perth Biodesign the University of Western Australia to learn more about healthcare innovation.
The Indian delegation attended roundtables with Australian medtech and digital health companies.
As part of the visit program, Austrade hosted 2 roundtables in Perth and Melbourne. The sessions provided Australian companies with a direct line of sight into India’s healthcare priorities and emerging demand areas, while the Indian delegation gained a better understanding of Australian capabilities.
Across both cities, consistent themes emerged. Conversations focused on the use of AI in healthcare; digital care delivery; precision medicine; telehealth; preventive healthcare; clinical research; and remote access solutions. For Australian companies, these represent real entry points into one of the world’s fastest-growing healthcare systems.
Mary Overington has 2 pieces of advice for Australian medtech and digital health tech companies looking to diversify to India.
‘First, it’s absolutely crucial to build market intelligence and understand India’s regulatory pathways, funding ecosystems, and demand drivers,’ she says.
‘The second piece of advice is to engage with Austrade for this market intelligence. We can share insights, organise introductions to partners and key stakeholders, and support you when you enter the market.’
