Heather Cotching - Chief Economist

Heather Cotching is the Chief Economist at Austrade. Heather is responsible for providing economic analysis to Austrade clients and senior executives, with a focus on the outlook for global trade and investment. She also manages a data science team responsible for integrating machine learning techniques and policy evaluation within Austrade.  

She has worked across five different government agencies in economics roles including Prime Minister and Cabinet, Treasury, the Murray-Darling Basin Authority and Department of Industry, Innovation and Science. 

She has an economics degree from the University of Tasmania. 

LAura Bateman - Acting director of the economics and analysis team

Laura has worked in economics in government and academia since 2010. Her expertise is in international trade and applied economic research. She has a passion for sustainable economic development and strengthening our engagement in Asia – particularly around food security, decarbonisation and climate resilience.

Laura has a keen interest in foreign policy and geopolitics. She holds a Master of Applied Economics (International Trade), and gained a PhD in Agricultural and Resource Economics from the University of Adelaide.

Emily Nguyen - Senior Economist, Economics and Analysis

Emily has extensive experience in economics research and corporate advisory. Prior to joining Austrade she worked in various private consultancy firms. From 2008 to 2017, she helped attract investments into listed enterprises in Vietnam using her skills in economics research and company analysis.

Since joining Austrade in November 2022, Emily has studied trade and exporters’ behaviour using micro data. Emily completed a Master of Economics degree from the University of Queensland with a Dean’s honour roll for academic excellence.

Fernando Ramirez – Economic Adviser

Fernando Ramirez

Fernando is an advocate for responsible economic development and international trade. Having grown up in Mexico City, he saw the effects of income inequality, slow economic growth, import-substitution policies and a decision-making process without strategic direction. This has stemmed his passion for finding solutions to complex problems that contribute to fostering a prosperous and ethical society.

Fernando holds a Bachelor of Economics from Anahuac University (Mexico City) and a Master of Economics from the Australian National University (ANU). He has broad experience across the private and public sectors, having worked as a stock market analyst, senior consultant for SGS Economics and Planning, and policy officer for the ACT Treasury. He has also worked in academia, as a research assistant at ANU and university lecturer for Anahuac University; teaching Advanced Microeconomics and Econometrics. Notable articles include Partnerships for the Sustainable Development of Cities written for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC).

Since Fernando joined Austrade in 2019, he has been involved in multiple projects including the evaluation of Austrade’s programs (Export Market Development Grants, general and tailored services), the Benchmark Report and development of an index for identifying the top performing markets. Fernando is also editor and an author of the weekly Executive Reading, an internal publication highlighting current economic issues.

Anne Louise-Knight - Senior Economist

Anne Louise Knight

Anne is a development and resource economist with a particular interest in how international trade can promote sustainable economic development.

She completed her Bachelor of International Studies with the University of New South Wales and was awarded a University Ambassador scholarship to study at the University of Bonn in Germany. She completed a Masters degree in Environmental Management and Development with the Crawford School of Public Policy at the ANU, where she graduated top of her class and was awarded the Tiri Tiri Prize. She also holds a Masters degree in Economics. She wrote her Masters thesis on finance initiatives for sustainable livelihoods in ethnic minority communities in Northern Vietnam, working with Care International and Forest Friends International. 

At Austrade, Anne reports on economic indicators in the Australian economy. She analyses market opportunities for Australian exporters by identifying and forecasting trends in two-way goods and services trade. Anne also conducts analysis on the relationship between climate change and international trade and investment, and is passionate about sustainable pathways to grow Australia’s economy. She has also published research on the gender and social equity considerations of the clean energy transition.

Prior to Austrade Anne worked with the New South Wales Government as a policy officer across the Energy and Water portfolios, and with the Stockholm Environment Institute as a researcher in Bangkok. She has conducted field work in Cape York, Vietnam, Thailand and Cambodia.
